Summer fishing in Ocean City, Maryland

The boat is parked at Fisherman's Marina in West Ocean city for the Summer.  We will be doing lots of fishing this Summer for flounder with conventional tackle in back bay and near shore waters.  Flounder fishing has been great on the inshore wreck and artificial reefs and we have already been catching some good ones. We have been targeting the fish with bucktail jigs or a variety of other deep rigs in 45 to 70 feet of water.

We are taking advantage of fly fishing opportunities when conditions permit.  Incoming tides during low light hours near dawn or dusk have offered some good Striper fishing near the jetties. We have been catching a bunch of fish 18 -27 " on a variety of flies.

Spring Fishing on the Upper Chesapeake Bay and Gunpowder River

We had some good fishing on the Susquehanna Flats during the last couple weeks of May.  We still had some good numbers of fish around this year later in the month, maybe due to the late Spring.  We caught fish on the fly and on light spinning tackle and chased the topwater bite wherever we could find it.

We have been fly fishing the Gunpowder River the last week or so and having good success.  Dry fly fishing has been great in areas of the river where the Sulfur mayfly hatch is in full swing.  Well presented CDC comparaduns or a variety  of other Sulfur dun and emerger patterns have been catching fish.

Susquehanna Flats Fishing 2015

What looked to be a promising start to the annual catch and release Striped Bass season this year has turned out to be a struggle.   We started fishing in early April and had good water conditions and temperatures.  We caught some decent fish in our first few outings some over 30".

Fishing took a quick turn for the worse as we had a push of dirty water come down the Susquehanna River causing spill  conditions at the Conowingo Dam.  This put a quick end to the fishing.  We have had a few bright spots since, and current conditions are fishable.  We have caught a few fish here and there on light spinning tackle casting jigs, spoons, and lures, but fly fishing has been tough.

Hopefully the last few days of the season will bring some better fishing as weather forecasts and water conditions look great.  I will be staying in Havre de Grace until May 20 at least to take advantage of the second opening of fishing.
